Programs and Events of Interest to CRM Students
The Criminal Justice Society
The Criminal Justice Society (CJSociety) is our CRM student organization. The CJSociety sponsors a number of activities during the academic year including socials, ride-alongs with various police departments, tours of correctional facilities, interviews with representatives from the DEA, ATF, FBI, prisons, probation/parole, and juvenile officers, to mention only a few.We encourage you join this group and become an active member of it. Participate in the tours and other professionally-related activities and, when possible, take responsibility for some of these activities - in other words, get yourself into a leadership position. The importance of this kind of activity can not be stressed enough.
When employer's look at an applicant's credentials, experience in extracurricular and leadership positions receives a great deal of attention. Anyone can join a group and go along with whatever happens - simply go with the flow. But it takes a very special person to get involved in determining the activities of an organization or its goals. Many, if not most, employers seek out leaders. Leaders hold the promise of being people who work hard, are confident and energetic.
Visit the CJSociety's home page to find out when the next meeting will take place, when tours are going to happen, catch some last minute updates and more. You can email the leadership of the CJSociety from their home page to find out when programs are happening.
The following are useful activities in which you may participate. Put on your best appearance and attend them! you have everything to gain and nothing to lose.
For more information on any of the events, please contact the Missouri State office of Career Center at 417-836-5636, or fax them at 417-836-6796. The office is located in Carrington Hall Room 309 and is open Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Be sure to check out this year's dates for:
Career Day
The Virtual Job Fair
The Workshop on Interviewing Skill
The Workshop on How to Work Career Day
Activities in Other Departments
If you are a member of another student organization (The Psychology Club, etc.), you may find that, rather than join another organization, you can get the organization you belong to to involve itself in some criminal justice-related activity. For example, there may be several members of the Psychology Club who would be interested in a prison tour, or having some criminal justice professionals come in to chat. Get the idea? Click here to find a list of all the department-related student clubs or here for all the student organizations on campus.
Student Organizations and Activities
Given the size of the Missouri State community, there are many other programs and events on campus in which you may be interested. Many student organizations on our campus have regularly scheduled activities.
The CRM faculty use a bulletin board on the west side of the hallway outside the Department of Sociology and Anthropology (4th floor of PACB). You may find announcements concerning upcoming programs and events posted there.
The Student Activities Council
The Student Activities Council (SAC) also sponsors activities (i.e., movies, displays, guest visitors to campus, concerts). Why not get involved in with this group? SAC represents another arena in which you can develop, display and use your leadership skills. Leadership skills, whether displayed in a criminal justice-related area or not, are valued skills. Develop and use them.
Activities on Other Springfield Campuses
There are other campuses in Springfield with criminal justice programs. Drury College and Evangel College are perhaps the two better known of them (Drury also has a master's program in criminal justice). Give them a call (Drury 417-873-7879, Evangel 417-865-2815) to determine if they have any events or programs of interest taking place this semester.
