Criminal Justice Society
Programs and Activities

February 2007

Hundreds of impoverished families and hundreds of elderly were faced with tons of debris from their trees following the terrible ice storm our area experienced this winter. Since many of them didn't have the personal resources needed to pay for having the debris removed, the United Way devoted a Week of Caring during which several hundred community volunteers helped remove the debris. And guess who else participated -- members of the Criminal Justice Society!

Lauren Keeling, CJSociety Vice President, and members Liz Michenfelder and Ryan Dunn pitched in and did a terrific job! What follows are some of the pictures taken the day they volunteered

That's Liz and Ryan. Along with Lauren, they raked an elderly woman's
entire lot and created piles of loose twigs for the city to pick up and haul away.

That's Lauren on the left and Liz and Ryan on the right. Smiling faces, even when volunteering for such back-breaking and tiring work. That's a sign of dedication to helping others ... something that makes these members of the CJSociety so valuable to the community.

Pizza! A well deserved treat for a hard day's work!
From the sponsor's of the CJSociety, Dr. Carlie and Ms Leamy,
CONGRATULATIONS for a job well done!

December, 2006

Several CJSociety members (listed below) participated in a very special event in order to celebrate Thanksgiving with our troops fighting in Iraq.

Nichol Sherrell, a MSU CJSociety member, informed CJSociety Vice-President Lauren Keeling that she knew someone who was taking donations for the Soldiers stationed in Iraq at Camp Bucca. Lauren thought that sending holiday greeting cards to some of the soldiers would be a worthy activity for the Society so ...

Lauren bought about 400 cards and, at the end of the last two CJSociety meetings in November, she asked for each member to grab a couple of cards and write a little something special in them. She explained to them what the cards were for and who they would be going to.

The CJSociety members finished writing in about 100 cards before finals took place. Due to a lack of time to finish the cards, Lauren filled out the rest of the cards and mailed them straight to one of the soldiers in Iraq (a soldier one of the CJSociety members knew) so he could distribute them to his fellow soldiers.

Included in the package containing the 400 cards Lauren added a letter on behalf of the CJSociety explaining to him what the cards where for, who they were from and why we decided to participate in such an activity. Among the CJSociety member who participated in this worthy event were: Brandi Brinkmeyer, Angel Callaway, Karen Craig, Ryan Dunn, Melissa Erickson, Luke Ewert, Matt Franke, Lauren Keeling, Mindy Laboube, Jessica Nash, Melissa Pieper and Adam Shook.

Congratulations to those members of the CJSociety for completing this meaningful project!

K-9 Patrol Event

On Wednesday, September 20th, 2006, the CJSociety sponsored a
presentation and demonstration by
K-9 officer Sergeant Michael Magill,
Bolivar (MO) Police Department. Attending with Sgt. Magill was "Justice,"
the K-9 dog, and one of the Sergeant's colleagues, Officer Dusty Ross.

A 20-minute discussion of how a K-9 unit works and some of the
situations K-9 units face was followed by a demonstration in front of Strong Hall,
home to the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology.

Here are some pictures of the event taken by Lauren Keeling,
Vice-President of the Missouri State Criminal Justice Society.

This is an example of just one of the many interesting programs sponsored by the Missouri State Criminal Justice Society. The CJSociety also sponsors presentations on probation/parole, corrections, special and topical issues in criminal justice and criminology as well as ride-alongs with police departments, prison visits and much more.
